Dear Parents and Carers

It is with deep regret that I write to you with some tragic news. Staff and students at The Roundhill Academy are deeply saddened with the news that Gordon Nairn, our school Premises Officer, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday morning after a short illness. The news of his death has come as a shock to the whole school community. Gordon has worked at the school since the year 2000 and was an integral part of the school and local community. In fact, he loved his job and the school so much he continued working at the school beyond his retirement age. Gordon’s wife, Diane, works at the school, as do other family members. Many family members are ex-students and he still has a grandchild attending The Roundhill Academy. Gordon was loved by all of the staff and students at the school and always had a smile on his face, would talk to anybody about anything and everything and always made you feel warm and welcome.

I know this is difficult news to comprehend and as a school we will do all that we can to support our young people and staff. We have a counsellor in school and the pastoral team are available for any students who feel they need to be able to talk to somebody. The school will be organising a book of condolence for staff and students to sign and leave messages that will be presented to the family as a token of our love and respect for Gordon.

I do not know any details of the funeral but given the length of time Gordon has served at the school and the lives that he has touched in our community, it is only appropriate that I may need to close the school for the funeral so that staff are able to pay their respects to this much-loved man. I know this may be an inconvenience for you as parents and carers but I am sure you understand the need for this decision at this difficult time.

I thank you for your support and concern and all our thoughts are with Gordon’s family and friends at this difficult time.

Yours sincerely

James Tickle
Principal
